Wooden Pipe

Planks of wood running longitudinally and wrapped by metal bands to form a pipe that runs for miles and is still in use.

Note the warning signing saying not to walk on pipe.

Lachlan Hotel

Not really related but looks like Lachlan has his own pub in Tasmania.

Lake Pedder

Camped at Ted's Beach on the shores of the controversial Lake Pedder.

Teds beach has an interesting origin. Ted was a big wig in the Hydro commission during construction and decided that there should be a beach for he public when the dam was filled. So in the middle of the scrub he had a patch cleared and the tops soil removed to expose the white rock which would decompose to form the beach. It was known sarcastically as Teds beach. But when the dam filled Ted was right and the name stuck.

Gordon Dam

No not the Gordon below Franklin dam - that wasn't built. This dam on the Gordon River really started all the controversy and kicked off the Green movement in Australia when it flooded the natural Lake Pedder.

Gordon Dam

There had to be some pretty smart engineering go into this wall it is all curves in 3 dimensions. Completed in 1974 a lot of the design work would have been done with slide rules. Maybe in the end the commission had access to some sort of prehistoric computer but there would not have been any sophisticated computer modelling of today.

It is a bloody long way down there.

Gordon River Gorge from on the dam wall.

Gordon Dam.

There is a Hydro station here but it is completely underground. It is even deeper than the bottom of the dam. The tailings race empties into the Gordon River further downstream where it is lower.

Creepy Crawley Walk

Nice walk through moss covered forest where you have to crawl under the branches. I suspect horizontal wood.
