Copper Mine

The mud map we were following indicated Trafalgar Mine a little further from Spring Creek. We found this old mine and judging by the blue/green colour I suspect they were mining copper but it is not in the position of  theTrafalgar Mine.

Mary Kay Town Centre

All the buildings of the Mary Kathleen town are gone. There are some slabs left and an information sign in the town square. These terracota tiles are on the floor of what was the wet canteen.

Mary Kay Town Centre

I have vague memories from Cloncurry days of sitting in a car near this fountain while dad went inside somewhere.

I thought this plaque looked a bit new. I have since found a slide of Dad's showing the original plaque.

The big hole.

The is surprisingly little security no locked fences. It would be very possible to fall over the edge. Would not have to be too determined to go down for a swim. We didn't take a geiger counter 🙂

Painted Rocks

There were a couple of aboriginal rock art sites between Mary Kay and Mt Isa. This is the only one we found.

The sign just off the main road suggested there was a sign here that explained the art work. Unfortunately the sign is no longer there. I would love to learn the significance of this spirit figure.

Mt Isa.

Unusually the full length of the Leichhardt River through town is full.

Mt Isa

It was interesting to have been visiting a number of old mine and smelter sites in the area that had only been in production for a few years to realise this mine has been in operation for nearly 90 years.

For you Dad. The rail yards in front of the mine.

Mum

Not the best of reasons to cut our trip short but Mum died on the 11th of July. We turned around and headed home.
