Blacks Beach - Mackay

We payed the extra and as well as the luxury of power and running water for a few day we were right on the beach!

Blacks Beach Mackay

The resident masked lapwings had chicks. There are three at present, another park resident said there were originally four.

Blacks Beach - Mackay

I wanted to get a little creative and have some blurring of the sea. I originally wanted to blur the cloud movement as well but could only get a shutter speed of 3 or 4 seconds not longer. The cokin filters I have also give a colour cast when I stack them. I have played with this in post production but I think I could perhaps do better.

It still wasn't much of a sunrise the next morning but the cloud formations still allowed me to get some interesting shots.

Cape Hillsborough

Doesn't everybody go to Cape Hillsborough to see the kangaroos on the beach?

We managed to drive from Blacks beach to Cape Hillsborough - without going back to the Bruce Highway. A nice drive through cane farms.

Before setting up a Cape Hillsborough we checked out Ball bay, Halliday Bay and the National Park campground at Smalleys Beach. All very nice.

Cape Hillsborough Kangaroos

Behind the stunning kangaroo on the beach photos.

The kangaroos are still wild.  But that are so popular and there are so many people that the interaction is controlled. Feed is placed on the beach so the kangaroos tend to stay in the one spot and plastic hats are used to keep the crowd at a safe distance. Yes a little artifical, but I understand why and it is still a pretty unique experience. You can still get great photos.

Cape Hillsborough - kangaroo poo scooper

No job is ever done until the clean up is complete.

The "ranger" has to sweep up the kangaroo poo.

A couple of Lapwings try to muscle in on the kangaroo action.

Cape Hillsborough - Wedge Island

A couple take an early morning walk across the natural causeway to Wedge Island.

View from the twin beaches lookout. This is wedge island with the tidal causeway that allows you to walk across on low tide.

Lake Broadwater - Dalby

The first night out on our western trip. Lake Broadwater is not far outside Dalby on the road to Moonie and St George.

The lake is natural and semi-permanent - is pretty low at the moment and signs are up prohibiting boating.

It was quite pleasant in the morning with the sun coming up over the lake.

St George

We stayed at the River Gums caravanpark in St George. St George is actually larger than I envisaged. I rode along the banks of the Baloone river to discover the St George camp draft was in process. I wasn't inconspicuous with my mountain bike amongst the jeans akubras and horses.

St George

A walk along the river in the morning came across this interesting sculpture. I can only assume the the Baloone river is part of the Darling river system and that there are Murray cod in the Baloone.

St George

This is the current weir with steel gates and vehicular traffic over the river. I was also excited to find the remnants of the original bridge dating back to the late 1800s. This rocky causeway across the river was an ideal place to cross with cattle in the early days. This is perhaps the reason for the existence of St. George.
