St Lawrence - Recreational Reserve

I couldn't tell you the number of times we have driven the road between Rockhampton and Sarina and have never been into St Lawrence. Wiki camps also shows cheap camping with hot showers at the recreation reserve adjacent to the wetlands win, win 🙂

St Lawrence - old rail bridge

St Lawrence was originally a port and an important link in the main North/South rail line. The old rail bridge across St Lawrence creek was replaced.  These are two of the original support columns.

It was pretty cool watching this Jabiru have a feed on some sort of bird. I am not sure what killed the bird or whether it was simply scavenged, but these other two birds of prey were not happy and pestered the Jabiru until the meal was all gone.

Guess what my new second hand big lens still wasn't big enough ( or I couldn't get close enough) 🙂 and I also had problems getting a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action.

St Lawrence Rec. Reserve

This butcher bird had no problems getting close and personal with we campers. Was definitely able to get close enough with my new lens 🙂

We were quite excited to see these feral deer. It was only when I took this photo that we saw the yellow ear tags perhaps not so feral.

Driving around we did see a larger herd of deer and some one building a high fence with square mesh so some one could be farming them.

St Lawrence to Sarina

Again this is a road we have driven up and down a lot without stopping. While I don't have lots of photos we did go into a lot of the places.

The tide was pretty full, so Clairview looked inviting and the caravan park had a lot of vans in.

Carmilla Beach - who knew there was a beach to the east of Carmilla? There are lots of camping spots on the beach front - a couple sets of toilets even a dump point. A boat ramp with access to the creek and then to open waters.

At Ilbilbie you can turn off the highway to Notch Point and Greenhill. Greenhill has good 4x4 access to the beach I think it is used primarily for launching boats off the beach. The road to Notch Point  goes past a fairly large prawn farming complex.  There is camping at Notch Point but we only went a far as a gate. The campground is rated pretty well on Wikicamps.

The Greenhill road also provides access to Cape Palmerston National Park. We went into the entrance. Most traffic from here seems to go up the beach. Again access to the beach would be no problem but we didn't take Clifford on to the beach.

The caravan park we are staying in opposite my old school in Sarina.

Sarina Town Clock

Very early in Senator Stan Collard's life as a representative he got to officially open this clock. The plaque is still there to prove it.

Finchhatton Gorge

Two different views of the Araluen waterfall.

I don't think I have been into Finch Hatton Gorge before.

Araluen waterfall.

Yep it was Ann's first time as well.

Araluen waterfall.

Not sure if I would have done this even if I had been here when I was in Sarina in high school. Definitely would not have gone swimming at this time of year it looked cold.

Crediton Hall Campground

The national park campgrounds at Broken River were booked out. (I think the National Parks booking site is a bit of a mess coping with Covid-19 restrictions)

We came about 10 km down the road to this campground.

Crediton Hall - Eungella

It was a bit cold though. A nice frost this morning.

Crediton Hall

The fees from camping are to be used to renovate the recreation hall. I think "they" are losing the battle. The roof on the back half of the hall is missing and the interior is exposed to the weather.

An iPhone panorama just up the road from the hall.

Broken River Platypus

As always this little guy was at the last viewing platform we went to. We saw him two days in a row. We also say another one in the river past the sign that said no platypus past here.
